关于spinster,
「Spinster is a term used to refer to an unmarried woman who is older than what is perceived as the prime age range during which women should marry. It could also indicate that a woman was considered unlikely to ever marry.The term originally denoted a woman whose occupation was to spin. 」
简单来说，是指到了适婚年龄还没结婚的老姑娘，即媒体常说的剩女。在1828年以及1913年的韦式词典是这样定义spinster的：
1 A woman who spins, or whose occupation is to spin.
2 Law: An unmarried or single woman.
在工业时代之前，spinster还是指代从事纺织的女性，包括未婚女性和已婚妇女，不过更多的是未婚的女性。从17世纪到20世纪，法律文件上会用spinster来表意没有结婚的女子。后来，spinster更普遍地指代超过适婚年龄还没有出嫁的女性了，例如简爱生活的年代，小说里有这么一段：
"You have never been married? You are a spinster?"
Diana laughed. "Why, she can't he above seventeen or eighteen years old, St. John," said she.
"I am near nineteen: but I am not married. No."

2005年，英国在官方文件中已经废除使用spinster来代指未婚女性，单身统统改为single. 不过目前香港仍然继续沿用spinster来指代单身未婚女性。而对单身男性的称呼，比起old maid/spinster来，bachelor实在友好很多。现代英语里，用spinster来形容单身女性似乎并不妥当。
大龄单身女青年，除了spinster, 剩女，在日本文化里，会用負け犬（makeinu,中文译为败犬）来指代年过三十未婚的女性。依旧是十分不友好的感觉呀。

关于女性的其他称呼，就连Miss和Ms，也会因为婚姻而被这样打趣，
说来说去，女性还是会绕不过结婚的问题，因为子宫在身上，所以非要经历过结婚，生娃才会被普通人认为是圆满吗？现代女性，有自由思想，有人生追求，健康漂亮，事业成功，还是单身就是很惨么？

这世上，有那么多人，有的人结婚了会很开心，有小朋友了，也会觉得人生会很有趣。有的人结了婚会比没有结婚要难过，还有的人是结了婚比不结婚要更开心。每个人都不一样。知道自己要什么，才是最大的问题吧。
