Human Bombs: Ten Theses on Suicide Terrorism

Human Bombs: Ten Theses on Suicide Terrorism

An anthropological talk by Gideon Aran

Friday, 5 May 2017 at 7:00 p.m.

Hong Kong Museum of History

Lecture Hall,Ground Floor, 100 Chatham Road, Tsim Sha Tsui

All are welcome!(Space, however, is limited to 139 seats)

The presentation concerns suicide terrorism in the context ofthe Middle East conflict and in global perspective. It is based on extensivestudy conducted during the Intifada in Jerusalem. The research combines intensive case study that draws onfieldwork (mostly in-depth interviewing and participant observation) withhistorical and comparative-theoretical analysis.

To kill while committing suicideis something essentially different from the sum of the two components of theact, something that may not necessarily be more difficult to do or explain thanthe doing or explaining of its two parts. Indeed, it may be that the twodefinitely contribute to each other and enable each other. If someone combinesthe killing of others with suicide, then the murder will sanction the suicide, and the suicide will sanction the murder.

This is because making amurderous attack upon others conditional upon self-destruction and committingboth simultaneously blurs the distinction between the aggressor and victim. Thus, although he is a murderer, he demands a moral status for himself, as itwere, and implicitly claims to have ethical superiority over the people hekills. This logic is fundamental to suicide terrorism, one component of theexplanation of this horrifying and enigmatic phenomenon.

The results of this research are summed up in a forthcoming booktitled: Suicide Terrorism: Anthropological Perspectives.
