Chen Shaoxiong,Collective memory - George Pompidou National, Ink on Canvas, 180x270cm, 2016

Chen Shaoxiong, Homescape, Photo cut-collage,55 x 30 x 40 x 10, 2005

Liu Yujia, The Koh Larn Island, Single channel HD video, 14’47”, 2017

Insights

Chen Shaoxiong | Passerby

‘Passerby’ is a solo exhibition of the late Chen Shaoxiong, showcasing three of his significant works and paying tribute to one of China’s most experimental artists and his contributions to the history of Chinese contemporary art. Chen Shaoxiong (1962–2016) was born in Guangdong province, China, and graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts there in 1984. He was a founding member of the Big Tail Elephants Group.

Liu Yujia  |  The Koh Larn Island

Liu Yujia was born in Sichuan Province in 1981. She graduated from Sichuan Fine Arts Institute in 2004 and got her Master’s Degree in London College of Communication, University of the Arts London in 2009. In 2017, Liu Yujia travelled to Koh Larn island near Pattaya, Thailand, and focused her attention on a wanderer living there. In her simple video narrative, the wanderer's miraculous experience is an allegory of the beach. The beach is both an incarnation of modernity and contains a strong anti-modernity sense at the same time.

In the era of globalization regarding such aspects as collision, blending, conflict and fragmentation, Liu Yujia has inadvertently written a cultural history or geography of the beach; what she truly cares about is how it is shaped into a new geographical structure and perceptual method when we attempt to weave it into a new narrative. Like Robinson Crusoe discovering footprints on the beach, this gives rise to surprise and fear, while inspiring wisdom and imagination. Here, the beach is a metaphor for frontiers, borders, and geopolitics. It also transcends existing definitions and grows into a new aesthetic medium and imaginative mechanism.
