My Experience in CUHK-Shenzhen

Dear friends,

Here I am. 8000km away from home in 40 degrees heat waiting for somebody to find this confusing Danish guy and introduce him to his new university. From all the things, I took into account when planning my exchange but temperature wasn’t one of them. Even though we had a warm summer in Denmark with temperatures as high as 12 degrees and almost a full day without rain in August, I wasn’t prepared for Shenzhen's heat!

When I arrived in CUHK-Shenzhen, I met lovely Alva from Academic Links Office who told me about campus life while we were walking towards my college building which is quite different from Denmark where no one lives at the school. The campus area is neat and is built in the best style of Feng Shui – or at least the Danish interpretation of it.

The days passed and the intro programme began. I wasn’t sure what to expect. I arrived at game night and honestly it couldn’t be further away from my expectations. At CBS, I got handed a beer and I was set for school. This was on the other hand fun and socializing in the best way I could imagine. To this day, I still feel sorry for knocking over my mentor group in one of the games "sit-up"(坐地起身) . Being 90kg heavy in China is a pretty tough life.

As school started, I quickly realized there is another part of the Chinese playful side. They are very focused on their acedemic study and on-campus life. I studied around 40 hours a week back in Copenhagen and quickly realized I had to work both harder and smarter to keep up at CUHK-Shenzhen. I’m still impressed by their ability and continuous will to keep studying all day. I need A LOT of coffee to make that happen.

One thing I really admire the Chinese is their genuine interests in different cultures. My friends sincerely enjoy teaching me about China – both culture and the language wise. Even though the language part didn’t go very well, I met nothing than polite and very helpful students. I joined a school clubs with 40 Chinese and one Thomas. They still took the time to explain it in English and make sure I can keep up as well. This embracing spirit is really one of the things I truly enjoy about China and my new Campus life.

The very first day I was here I had the pleasure of being introduced to the teaching assistant of one of my courses. Even though I hadn’t been sleeping for 20 hours and didn’t present the best side of myself, it didn’t seem to matter. We had a friendly talk about the course I was about to take. As classes begun, I met and talked with a lot of my professors. And I even have some on WeChat which amazed me quite a lot. I wouldn’t even dare to send an email to my professor back in Copenhagen without reading the course book 2 times and have someone check my grammar.

Okay, maybe I’m exaggerating but having this relationship to your professors is new for me. However, I think it’s a good model to let the masters of their subject have a completely down to earth conversation with the leaders of tomorrow.

I'm very impressed with this school and I'm lucky to experience a semester in CUHK-Shenzhen. Team OAL, Alva and Shirley are always here to help whenever I need it, if not any of my many intro buddies can assist. I think it’s important to recognize who are valuable ambassadors for your school and so far, those two keep surprising positively.

I have enjoyed my time here and I participated in many school activities. And I got to share Danish culture in my booth on the International Culture Day. While I was studying in Shenzhen, I also learnt a lot more about Modern China. And  I've learnt to speak the language a bit before I left China. Hope you will cherish your time at CUHK-Shenzhen if you are there for a short or long time. All I have left now is the memories. Thank you!

Best regards

Thomas
